Email Reader vs Email Converter — Choose the Shortest Route

Learn when to read an email archive directly in your browser and when to convert PST, OST, MBOX, OLM, MSG or EML into another format.

Reading and Converting Solve Different Problems

Opening an email archive and converting it are often presented as the same task. They are not.

An email reader helps you access the information already inside the file. An email converter produces a new file that another application can import. Choosing the right starting point saves time, avoids unnecessary downloads and makes the next step clearer.

Use Email Reader When You Need the Message

Start with MailtoPst Email Reader when your goal is to:

  • Check whether an archive contains the expected mailbox.
  • Browse folders and message counts.
  • Search for a sender, subject or term.
  • Read an old conversation.
  • Find and open an attachment.
  • Review the source before deciding what to export.

The browser becomes the temporary client. No Outlook profile, Thunderbird import or Apple Mail configuration is required.

Use Converter When You Need a New Format

Start with the MailtoPst Converter when your goal is to:

  • Import an MBOX archive into Microsoft Outlook as PST.
  • Move a PST archive into Thunderbird or Apple Mail as MBOX.
  • Extract messages as portable EML files.
  • Move email between platforms that do not share a native format.
  • Deliver a converted archive to another person or system.

Conversion changes the container while preserving the usable email data the target format can represent.

A Simple Decision Test

Ask one question: Where should the email be when the job is finished?

If the answer is “on my screen so I can read it,” use Email Reader.

If the answer is “inside Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail or another workflow,” use Converter.

If you do not know yet, begin with the Reader. Inspecting the source gives you the context needed to choose a destination format without guessing.

Common Scenarios

“I Received a PST and Do Not Have Outlook”

Use Email Reader first. You can confirm the mailbox, browse its folders and recover the necessary content. Convert only if you later need the whole archive in another application.

“I Need My Gmail Takeout in Outlook”

The source is generally MBOX and the destination requires PST. This is a conversion job. Use the MBOX-to-PST route in the converter.

“I Only Need One Attachment From an Old OST”

This is a reading job. Reconnecting the original Exchange account or converting the entire mailbox adds steps without helping the immediate goal.

“I Need Individual Files for a Case or Ticket”

Inspect first if you need to identify the relevant messages. Then convert the selected archive to EML when the downstream workflow requires individual portable message files.

Cost and Access Model

Email Reader includes a limited preview so you can validate the archive. Full archive access is €19 for 30 days.

Converter starts with 50 MB of free conversion credit. Larger jobs are priced according to the conversion offer shown before the paid step. A failed conversion is not charged.

One Archive, Two Ways Forward

MailtoPst keeps the choice visible instead of forcing every archive into a conversion funnel. Read it when you need the content. Convert it when you need a new container.
